Mean ol’ levee, taught me to weep and moan
And the hits just keep on coming...
The floodwall on the 17th Street Canal levee was destined to fail long before it reached its maximum design load of 14 feet of water because the Army Corps of Engineers underestimated the weak soil layers 10 to 25 feet below the levee, the state’s forensic levee investigation team concluded in a report to be released this week.
That miscalculation was so obvious and fundamental, investigators said, they “could not fathom” how the design team of engineers from the corps, local firm Eustis Engineering and the national firm Modjeski and Masters could have missed what is being termed the costliest engineering mistake in American history.
The failure of the wall and other breaches in the city’s levee system flooded much of New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina slammed ashore Aug. 29, prompting investigations that have raised questions about the basic design and construction of the floodwalls.
“It’s simply beyond me,” said Billy Prochaska, a consulting engineer in the forensic group known as Team Louisiana. “This wasn’t a complicated problem. This is something the corps, Eustis, and Modjeski and Masters do all the time. Yet everyone missed it—everyone from the local offices all the way up to Washington.”
BUT BUSH! BUSHITLERBURTONCHIMPLYFLIGHTMCMISSIONACCOMPLISHED!
The ridiculous web of bullshit spun by those who started blaming Bush before this hurricane even made landfall is coming apart. Anyone with half a brain knew it was nonsense from day one...but hey, there’s a Bush to hate, why should we look at facts and fix REAL problems when we can blame FEMA for not getting ice where it needed to be? Let’s not examine the corruption and incompetence that led to this disaster or anything...that might fucking help without creating a new layer of bureaucracy and another media-created scandal to which the Democrats can all jerk off.
Hat tip: Wizbang, where Paul had this to say:
This is not a single story from the TP. They have a new smoking gun almost daily, this is just today’s edition. It is amazing what just 2 or 3 writers have dug up. I must confess, I’ve never much liked the TP… But these guys are doing some of the best journalism I’ve ever witnessed on this story. If you have an interest, dig thru their archives, it will astound you. The MSM is being embarrassed.
I’ll be digging. Will you?

Absolutely, Bush, the feds, FEMA...all responsible for the terrible response once they had boots on the ground, so to speak. Proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Feds are not ready to be (AND SHOULD NOT BE) the first responders...ever. In this case they weren’t even ready to be second responders. Or support. Or go-fers.
If people stuck to that area of criticism, I’d stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the craziest MoveOn douchetard. But they don’t. And like you say, we can’t eat them. More’s the pity. :)

Who are you kidding? They’re probably stringy and gamey - not enough meat on their bones to feed a family of Vegans. Except for Moore-on, but I’d hate that kind of cholesterol shock to the system…

JimK and FoxNews.com both mention the story of the forensic results of the 17th street levee failure. Fox News mentions that the design document for the current structure is from 1993. If I am correct, that would mean that the reconstruction of that levee happened during the previous President, Bill...

The only thing you can really hold Bush on is that he didn’t step up when it became apparent how fucked up the response effort had been.
Blaming him for the levees breaking, or for the response being bungled in the first place is fucking stupid.
Of course, I fully expect this to turn into “Bush knew that soil was bad!!!”
Fucking liberals… I wish it were legal to eat them.
