Trek vs. Wars - Why pick a side?
Michele and Turtle at Faster Than The World are asking Star Trek or Star Wars?
I say choosing sides is for people without imagination.
::throws up fists ready for a fight, knowing Michele could proably kick his ass::
In all seriousness, though, I’ve never understood why Trek and Wars fans picked sides. I have always loved both. I also love DS9 and Babylon 5, Stargate and Battlestar Galactica (both incarnatons). I was a Twilight Zone kid. I worshipped Farscape. I watched Alien Nation and V. I liked Invasion because it had aliens. I watched Andromeda until it got so bad that I was forced to turn away...although I watched it more to see Lexa Doig than any real enjoyment of the show. :) Hell, I even own DVD sets of Space: 1999, and that show is horrible. It makes Star Trek look like Shakespeare. And I am, without a doubt, a card-carrying Star Wars Geek.
See, the thing is? I love Science Fiction. I don’t have to pick a side. I don’t root for any particular team. I own the whole goddamned league.

I *liked* DS9. I know that JMS pitched B5 to Paramount and then miracle of miracles, they have a show with a station out in the middle of nowhere, a big flashy wormhole thing, prophets, religion, ancient wars, one race formerly enslaving another...I know. I do not deny it for a moment, but I still liked DS9.
Just not as much as B5. :)
I haven’t watched the BSG webisodes yet...but that’s on my list as soon as the Rock Star finale is over.

DS9 didn’t sit too well with me till sisko shaved his head and the Dominion was finally brought in, after that it was great show, except for teh finale.
NOW B-5 is just about he BEST sci fi ever put on TV… GREAT Drama, and if you wanted humor you watched FARSCAPE…
god damm was that show funny.

DS9 for me was my favorite of the Trek spinnoffs while they were fighting the Dominion, but the finale was a major let down.
As for B5, I have to admit I hated the first season with a passion. The original captain had 2 emotions and if he turned sideways, he disapeared. The introduction of Sheridon, however, picked the show up and made it great. But it did over extend its welcome, and went on for one season more than it needed, much like X-Files.
And I heard that story by JMS and his deep hatred for Paramount at every convention I saw him at, which I think helped foster this mentatlity of “YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE”. Talented dude, but man, held a grudge longer than the Mafia.

DS9 was OK when it first started for me (I was 6 if I recall) but I remember getting really excited when the Dominion came, then the Defiant and then the cherry on the whipped cream: Worf. Sure, he was already on another show, but he’s Worf; the baddest MFer in the alpha quadrant and by far the most quotable person in Star Trek (IMO). That being said, I’m such a star wars geek it’s not even funny. I don’t know why people decide to choose sides or why they put up boards like, “Who would win? Federation or Rebel Alliance/Empire?”
Look, both are big pieces of pop culture history. One changed the way we live, the other changed the way we look at movies

Jim, this is worse than Liberal vs. Conservative. Its blasphemie to like more than one series. You have to choose!! I’ve heard some seiesly jacked up crap come out of the hardcore fans. To hear B5ers talk, watching Deep Space 9 was just a step above worshipping the devil.
Now, how come no comment on the webisodes of Battlestar?
Their just a goddam tease, I tell ya.
