Obama era expected to end taboo on gays in US military
Good.
Sixteen years after Bill Clinton tried to end restrictions on gays in the military, the US armed forces under Barack Obama may be forced to give homosexuals the same welcome as non-gays.
Under president Clinton, the policy that once saw homosexuals discharged from US military service evolved to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” allowing gays to remain in the military so long as they did not reveal their sexual orientation.
Obama has pledged to overhaul current law.
“The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited,” reads an entry on the president-elect’s transition website.
Going way back in the early days of this blog I talked about the anti-gay rules in the military, and especially how they hurt us tactically when the military started firing Arabic linguists left and right for being gay. Beyond the rights issue, we have been irresponsibly stupid over the years by forcibly removing good and patriotic men and women from service just because they like grab-ass with people whose parts match their own. Beyond the blogging, for my entire life I have been a proponent of full and equal...no, that’s not right either. “Equal” rights for anything implies that there is a separation that deserves noting and I don’t believe that. I have always believed in full recognition of the same rights gay people have that everyone else has. I believe those rights to be inherent and obvious, and recognition that they are legally no different as human beings is the way things oughtta be, to steal a phrase.
Obama is god-damned frightening when it comes to economic policy. He seems to be a bigger spender than anyone could or has ever imagined. However, on this issue, I proudly state that my President would do me proud to eliminate this irresponsible and unconstitutional discrimination of good and decent (and useful) patriotic Americans. Not only is it wrong, it’s actually harming our safety and security. As a practical matter, we are making a huge mistake here.
Gay people should be able to proudly serve their country if they so choose, and we as a people should count ourselves lucky that we treat them so poorly and yet they still want to stand between us and the barbarians at the gate. I’m not sure I would love my country that much if I were gay. I’m not sure some of you would either. If you are one of those who despise gay people, think about the ones that volunteer to get between you and a bad guy with a rifle. If your very next thought isn’t “Thank you so much for being a better person than I am” then you clearly need to do some soul-searching.

If he does it, it’s fantastic, and it will always be a point in his favor. If nothing else I’ll be able to look at it and say “This is something great that came out of Obama’s presidency”.
... Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many promises made not to be cynical about it. So I’ll believe it when it happens, when it’s tested, and when it bears out, and not before.

I’ve never been in the military and have no idea what the actual effect would be. But I do think it would be an interesting idea to have a corps of elite paratroopers that could drop in and buttfuck the opposition to death. See how many countries want to mess with us after one or two of those.

Hi Jim
Tried sending you a message but I don’t think it worked, so I’m going to have to post an off-topic comment.
Rock of Love 3 (On the Bus) is now on...2 episodes in...any chance of you blogging it like the last 2 and making my Mondays enjoyable again?
cheers
Wes

Likely won’t be doing it any time soon either. I wouldn’t be surprised if it winds up being an 11th hour executive order by Obama as he’s going out the door.
I also saw that about 10% of our military force would not re-enlist if it happens. While I don’t think the actual number to not re-enlist would be that high it would still be significant, and a number I doubt would be overcome by all the out of the closet gays that would like to join the military.
Gay people get to gladly serve their country which now potentially is less safe because of it.

Well, what’s the alternative? “Sure, we’d love to let you throw yourself in death’s path to defend your country, but apparently 10% of the people already doing that are such huge pussies that they won’t do the same if people whose lifestyle they disagree with get to do it as well”?

Well Rann, perhaps you should be taking an inverse of Jim’s final statement into consideration for yourself. They may not be comfortable serving with openly gay men, but they are volunteering to get between you and the bad guy with the rifle.
I’m not taking any real position on this because I really don’t care. But I do think Obama is making flowery pandering statements to his progressive base that at some time in the future he will remove the Don’t ask don’t tell policy, but its not going to be anytime soon. And I think it won’t be until a point where he gets to take the credit for it, and deals with none of the fallout.

Right up until they have to do it with someone they don’t like.
Oo-rah for duty and country, eh?

Because discomfort = dislike, and is all so good for military discipline isn’t it.

Yuh-huh.
Hey, Buzzion, if they were talking about integrating blacks into the military, and ten percent said they’d refuse to come back if they did it, would you be supporting them then? After all, racism is discomfort.
Hey, Buzzion, if they were talking about integrating women into the military, and ten percent said they’d refuse to come back if they did it, would you be supporting them then? After all, sexism is discomfort.
Or, hey, Buzzion, here’s another question, since when the everliving fuck did the United States Armed Forces turn into a god damn fucking democracy? As I understood it, it’s a place where you take your fucking orders and you follow them with a “Yes, sir”, and it doesn’t much fucking matter if that order makes you uncomfortable as long as it’s a lawful one.
I’m sure running your ass off with a backpack full of bricks isn’t very comfortable. I’m sure sleep deprivation isn’t very comfortable. I’m sure being yelled at and screamed at and told you’re worthless and you’ll never amount to anything except soaking up a bullet or two is pretty damned uncomfortable.
But because some macho twits can’t fight beside gay people because they’re so fucking afraid of having their junk stared at for two seconds longer than it should, we all suddenly need to be sensitive to their feelings. Maybe while we’re at it, we can stop getting them up so early in the morning, I hear that causes stress and stress can’t be good for combat efficiency.
That ten percent? They’re bigots. And their bigotry is apparently stronger than their commitment to their country. If they don’t want to re-up because they can’t stand the idea of someone who makes them UNCOMFORTABLE by their very presence, I think the only thing that needs to be said is “Very well, thank you for your service, goodbye.” No one would be afraid to say that if it was someone saying “No way I’d fight in a unit beside a black guy! He makes me uncomfortable!”, but since it’s homosexuals somehow I have to respect them?
If they wouldn’t fight with me, how in the fuck could I ever expect them to fight for me? If they were literally standing between me and some snarling Islamo-fascist with a dagger, and they noticed a picture of a naked guy on my computer monitor, how would I not expect him to say “Sorry, man, you make me uncomfortable, I’m gonna go defend some straight people”? Because that’s essentially what they’re saying… homosexuality just makes them too uncomfortable to defend their countrymen like they signed up to do.
Also, just to knock this down, for the idea of “give it time for the people to change, don’t force it"… it’s never going to change otherwise. Because that ten percent will realize that they apparently have their Commander In Chief’s balls in a noose.
If a child keeps throwing tantrums to get the toys and candy they want, when you say “Oh he’ll grow out of it” and just give in, no he will not fucking grow out of it because he sees that it works and he will throw some version of those tantrums for the rest of his life, until someone finally says “No you can’t have it.” and sticks to it.
I may not like it, but Obama’s going to be the Commander In Chief of the armed forces. He could order them to march into a deathtrap, he could order them to conquer Guam, he can sure as hell tell them to stop being babies and let the poofters fight too. If you can’t take orders without squirming around like a four-year-old that needs to piddle, maybe you should seek different employment anyway.

Equating homosexuals to blacks is one of the biggest pieces of bullshit liberal ideas out there.
Hey, Buzzion, if they were talking about integrating women into the military, and ten percent said they’d refuse to come back if they did it, would you be supporting them then? After all, sexism is discomfort.
Women make up a larger part of the population, and could likely cause a replacement of the 10%. But I don’t expect to be seeing any Starship Troopers barracks anytime soon. And most consider Israels integration of women into the military to not be all that successful.
And as you know “poofters” are allowed to serve now. They just can’t be out and proud. You’re allowed to hate the “bigots” that aren’t comfortable serving with people out of the closet, you know because they’re love of country just isn’t as strong as their discomfort around gay people. How about for the gay people who’s love of country just isn’t as strong as their desire to wear the rainbow shirt?
There are things that do need to be addressed with this, especially in the instances of units that do tend to be unisex. PDA, and beyond even that.

Aw, that’s cute. You’ve got lame excuses for your bigotry.
Again.

Oh, also, love how you try to bawww that gay people are allowed to serve… so long as they keep up a constant facade of being straight and cultivate a healthy paranoia about the fact that if they let something slip and get found out, they could be kicked right the fuck out. Sounds uncomfortable, to me… aren’t we supposed to be making sure the soldiers are comfortable? Not very comfortable in the closet, so it’s almost like you’re using a double standard there! Shock!
Can’t wait to see you cry, whine, and try to spin your way out of the bigot label.
Again.

Applause!
