Server wierdness

I’ve been having mail server issues for a *long* time now...turns out it was Lee’s fault!  :) Someone was sending him *thousands* of spam emails a day.  Multiple thousands, with attachments.  For some reason trying to forward his Moorewatch address to his real one was creating massive mail queues that would eventually clog the server and eat all the CPU.  I deleted his Moorewatch mail account and the server just dumped 4500 messages on my account alone.

If you just got a shit-ton of emails from one of our sites...sorry!

Go to hell.  I am fully aware of the new trick you’re using against me; you find old entries and employ a real human to leave an on-topic comment with a spam link in it.  I will delete every link you leave and ban every account you use to leave them, including IPs.  You will not be successful in using my site to generate Googlejuice.

Keeley Hazell sics her lawyers on me

Quite awhile ago I posted the sex tape Keeley Hazell made.  Looks like she really wasn’t in on leaking it...she’s sending lawyers after people that posted it.  Yeah, nothing harms the reputation of a nude model like her fans seeing a sex tape.  Baby girl don’t want no fan base and publicity, baby girl don’t get no fan base and publicity.

Sitemeter and the TTLB Ecosystem

I’ve been getting reports that the site has trouble loading for IE7.  It’s not all the time.  I’ve replicated the problem myself.  I think it;s related to the new Sitemeter addition of a cookie from specificclick.  That’s spam.  I already block specificclick through Firefox via the Adblock plugin.  I’m not about to subject anyone else to it just for stat tracking.  It’s one thing to track stats and report the data to me - I own the site.  It’s quite another to report the data to third parties for God knows what purpose.

Not to mention the fact that specificclick seems - specifically - to be the thing that IE7 hangs on before it says “Cannot load.” Out it goes.  Let me know if it still happens periodically, all you IE7 users.

As for the TTLB Ecosystem, I’m sick of looking at “slithering reptile” or “rodent” or other demeaning rankings when I have ten times more traffic and an equal number of incoming links than some of the “large mammals.” Plus it’s rarely actually working, so...out it goes.

Commenting slower?  Plus other issues…

Something went haywire with Bad Behavior, the plugin that has been stopping bad people from flooding me with spam trackbacks and comments.  It seems to be unable to read from its database table, and even after deleting, recreating and reinstalling it is just broken.  I have since installed Askimet, the Wordpress-created system that is supposed to do the same thing.  It seems, at least to me, to have slowed things down a touch - it seems to take longer to submit a comment.  Not much longer, maybe an extra 5-8 seconds.  Anyone else noticing that?

While I’m here - There also seems to be a problem with email off this server.  We’re running Qmail, and it seems to be sending a bare LF as described here.  I think.  However, my version of sendmail already has the fix in there.  It still fails.  When I try using an outside SMTP server, every one I have tried has failed me for this bare LF thing.

When I switch to using PHPMail, it says everything is fine but doesn’t actually go anywhere.  No one gets the mail.  This means that if you ask the system to send you a password, it may not get to you.  If fact it probably won’t.  I don’t know why, and I also don’t know how long it will take to fix.  In the mean time, just email me directly if you have account issues.

Lastly, I have removed the email confirmation requirement when signing up.  I enabled captcha for new signups, hopefully that plus Askimet will eliminate robots from making accounts.  I have also put a trouble ticket in to Softlayer to see if anyone can solve this freaking problem.

*UPDATE*

Interesting progress - 8 million emails are stuck in the queue.  Eight.  Million.  It’s actually closer to 7.900,00, but I’m rounding up that last 100,000 or so.  That would be why the mail system is borked.  They’re working on cleaning it up and installing a script to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

As for the Bad Behavior thing, one of the trackback spammers left a bad character that corrupted the record, and when I repaired it from the recent backup it was still catching bad guys, and everyone else too!  I fixed it and I might go back to it, but Askimet seems to be doing pretty good and it churns the database a lot less, so we’ll see.

alt.spammers.dead.dead.dead

A little over a month ago, I mentioned the Bad Behavior plugin and the fact that I recently installed it here in the site.  Since the day I installed it, approximately 35 days ago, Bad Behavior has stopped 226,937 attempts at comment or trackback spam.  In the first week, something like three attempts got through.  Since then?  Not one.  Not a single spammer has been able to penetrate the multiple layers of defense currently in place here, including Bad Behavior.

226,937 attempts.  6484 attempts per day.  270 attempts an hour.  Imagine what big sites must deal with?  All for some Google juice that doesn’t last more than a day or three until Google catches them.
