Girls who kick ass…uhh…kick ass, and why I agree with Joss Whedon

(The following post was restored from Google’s cache after the great hard drive crash of August 2006)

First, watch Joss Whedon talk.

I have a thing.  You know how people have a type?  Hair color, facial features, body type, whatever.  Everyone has a type that goes to the top of The List.  For me, it’s tough women that physically and/or emotionally kick ass and take no shit.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I have three physical types, which is what most people refer to when they say “What’s your type?” I like skinny redheads with huge racks.  I married one of those.  :) I like sultry brunettes with...well, huge racks.  I’m sensing a theme.  Lastly I’d say ethnic...Asian, Latin, Middle Eastern, it all works.  And of course, huge racks.  I can’t help that, I like ‘em.  Sue me.

None of that actually matters if she beats ass.  A woman who will work hard enough to look good and kick someone’s ass is not a woman to be trifled with.  That kind of woman is the kind of woman that makes it worth coming home at the end of the day.  Doormats are for feet-wiping.  A partner - girlfriend, companion, wife, whatever label you use - should simply be the other, equal half of your relationship.  She shouldn’t dominate you, but neither should you dominate her.  Except when either of you want to be tied up.  But I digress.

I’m remembering a Joss Whedon-crafted scene with Wash being interrogated by the Alliance, where he looks the interrogator in the eye and says “Have you ever been with a warrior woman?” It’s the perfect summation of this concept.  It’s gratifying to partner yourself with a woman who is your equal.  It’s challenging, exciting...it keeps you on your toes.  The sex ain’t bad neither. ;)

I’m not talking about physical strength here, or actual fighting ability.  Women who don’t take any shit can demonstrate that by simply being confident and smart.  That doesn’t translate well to TV and movies though, so you have to write action to visually impart that this is a no-nonsense woman you’re dealing with here.  Guff and sass will not be tolerated.

Example: Almost every movie character played by Milla Jovovich.  Kate Beckinsale in Underworld (ok, Kate Beckinsale anytime in anything, but you get my point).  Summer Glau in Firefly and Serenity.  I could go on, but I think you’re getting the point.

Let me be clear: I am in no way referring to feminism or feminists.  That is a political point of view, and I believe that not only are today’s feminists asking for special treatment (not equality), but they marginalize and paint as victims women who have it in themselves to stand on their own two feet without being portrayed as someone who is “less than.” To constantly ask for special help, special labels, special laws is to state that you can’t cut it on an even playing field.  No, I’m talking about real strength, of character, of spirit, of mind...and if she can throw a roundhouse kick to the jaw and make your eyes pop out when wearing a tube dress, all the better.

This is a totally selfish position, by the way.  I mean as a “concept” (sorry Joss) equality should be the default position of humanity.  As a practical consideration, however, I am advocating this for purely selfish reasons.  I feel better about myself because my partner challenges me.  I am physically turned on by strength in a woman.  On top of that, the public reception of my position by women is favorable.  I can’t friggin’ lose here.  No matter how you slice it, this is a winning attitude to have.

If you are a man who doesn’t appreciate a strong woman, I put it to you that you are not a complete man.  I put it to you that there is something in you that needs a weaker companion in order to feel better about yourself.  Fix that...you’re missing out.  How will you ever know you are strong unless you are tested by the person who knows you best?

Besides, have you ever been with a warrior woman?
